About Dan

1950's. Daniel Bryan Gaydos was born in Pittsburgh, PA, January 4th, 1954.

He was one of a family of 6: one older sister and 2 younger brothers.

Every family is unique, but there was a textbook suburban baby-boomer-family nature to the era: many new dreams, and many new problems in post WWII America.

1960's. Started first grade in 1960. Was in public school til the 2nd semester of 11th grade. Found and applied to a private progressive high school, which opened my eyes to really learning. The processes and styles of education other than mainstream are still dear to me now.

1970's. Graduated HS with a powerfully intact group of student friends who remained together in our first houses outside of our parent's homes. This was largely due to a phenomenal world religion study and meditation group and educational mentors who showed us how to apply philosophy and religion to our everyday lives.

One of my own joys during this time was volunteering as a candy striper at the local Presbyterian hospital. Learned and worked in many trades, such as landscaping, home building and concrete construction before and after attending Cornell University.

1980's. My son Lucien Aerin was born in 1980. Gravitated from seasonal construction trades to hospitality/restaurant management and service. Created numerous project recording studios and one professional recording studio. The love of music and sound germinated a lifelong career path in audio arts and technology.

My first salaried position at WRS Motion Picture and Sound, in Pittsburgh, advanced to sound department manager.

  • My daughter, Raiona Daisa, was born.
  • We moved to Long Island.
  • My wife began her Doctorate in Phenomenology and I commuted to NYC.

Once we moved to New York, my focus became audio arts education, with many freelance projects along the way:

1989-2000. NYU Kanbar Institute of Film and Television. Was Sound Area Supervisor, WNYU Radio faculty advisor, and adjunct faculty. (1989-2000)

2000-2002. Co-director of audio design and installation, Institute for Exploration, at the Mystic Seaport in Connecticut.

2002-2016. Institute of Audio Research, NYC. Full time faculty member. Taught 90% of the full post-secondary course curricula. (To be continued!)

Daniel Bryan Gaydos. Bio Part 2 of 2. During this whole period, (1992-2012), was co-founder and President of non-profit organization, The Museum of Sound Recording. Originating in Brooklyn, NY, its primary mission was to demonstrate working vintage recording studio systems to the public by donating publicly-attended recording sessions to new musical and spoken word artists of all genres. The Museum provided a venue and usually an album's worth of multitrack recordings.

By the end of 2015, my beloved life partner began to need me nearby because of progressing illnesses. I ceased commuting to NYC daily and began working at Le Canard Enchaine, a famous French bistro, as a server. I am still working there, bless my legs and feet!

Concurrently, in 2015, I was invited and hired to be engineer/announcer for the local Kingston Community Radio, WGHQ, AM 920, 92.5 FM and online at my KCR.org. I'm still working there too.

Marianne passed away in early 2018.

By 2019, I met a phenomenal person, Maggie, who is my domestic partner of 4 years, and fiancé since last year. In the spring of 2022, we purchased our wonderful forever home, 334 Third Avenue, which includes a huge yard and everything else we dreamed of!

And now we arrive in the present! I work 24-28 hours at Le Canard. I work 6:30 AM to 9:30 AM weekdays for Kingston Community Radio. The stipend I receive is 1/3 to 1/4 the commercial rate for what I do, but the contribution to the community is such a good cause.

Maggie and I volunteer for Peoples Place. We contributed an ongoing workshop called “The Power Of Sound” at People's Place Wellness Empowerment Center. Along with exercising the sheer joys of listening and playing music, the workshop centered on the healing and therapeutic nature of sound and music. We conducted this workshop from August 2021 through June 2022.

I intend to slack off on the restaurant work and re-enter the audio arts workforce, my wheelhouse. More giving back to the communities of Kingston and Ulster County as a whole is always exciting and fulfilling.
